Well hello everybody.  Let's start with some pics...

Guys with makeup... I wonder how two inches of it would make me look..

Rrrr-rep!  I love those in-car pictures Koreans love to snap.

O jea.  RaWkinN 2 soMm H4RdDXXCorEe GAnGstAa rEpPp bAhhh {.50} 2pAc WiGgA 4LyfE (props to whoever gets that).

Pretty damn weird.  Why?! .....

Very nice touch.

K, let's get down to business.  Unforunately, personally of all of the asian races, I am most biased against Japanese.  Nothing against them personally...that's just how it is, for some reason.  I think a lot of it has to do with having almost no Japanese kids at my school, which allows me to characterize them as stereotypical non-humans without ever feeling bad about it.  Pretty sad that I naturally hate what I am not personally exposed to, but that's just how it is.

My wondering of the day is whether the Japanese are hated the most of all asian nationalities (I would perfer "ethnicities", but I suppose that's not politically correct enough to be used outside of parentheses).  And more than that, I want to see why it is true for me.  I would point to their unillustrious military history and how the U.S. blatantly demonized them more than the Koreans (who were unexplicably ignored during their tragic war) or the Chinese (who weren't as hated because of the Nationalists vs. Communists thing).  I've learned about "idealogical thinking" and I think the American way of thinking has led to my thinking of the Japanese as all weird, evil, distant people.  I really want to meet some Japanese-American people soon, to get away from that.

So, question rephrased is:
Do you think American idealogical thinking has been the primary factor in making the Japanese the most hated of all the asian countries for some people?  Or is it more the lack of exposure to them in person?

--update coming soon, I have my reasons/excuses for waiting...---

Nothing against the current Japanese people but you have to remember, some Chinese (and their descendants) still alive from the WW2 days have quite a bit of bad blood between them and the Japanese.

Right, I understand that if you've been harmed by a certain ethnicity of people, it's somewhat reasonable for you to not like that generation of people.

But what if you haven't? What influences your opinion of that ethnicity as a whole more: the past generations' hateful opinions OR the lack of interaction with them? Another way to look at it is, if one of the two were removed, would the hate still exist?

Gotta represent, yo.

Actually, in comparison to other Asian "nationalities," I believe that the Japanese have a pretty good image in America. I'm inclined to believe that the Japanese culture is the most recognized and respected of all Asian cultures in America. I mean, many Americans have had exposure to their culture in one way or another. For instance, many American teenagers have fallen in love with Japanese video games and the consoles that are produced in that country. The arrival of Japanese anime has also boosted the image of the Japanese in the eyes of Americans. Also, there are many American adults who prefer to drive Japanese cars, or at least this appears to be the trend here in SF; about 70% of the cars around here are Japanese. I also know of many Americans who dream of visiting Japan someday. Japan is probably the most popular destination in Asia that Americans wish to visit.

I also haven't met many Japanese Americans, but I know that a sizable Japanese American population resides in Southern California.

I will go as far as to say that Japanese technology is a step ahead of American technology, or if it isn't, it will be someday. Isn't it amazing how Japan has the second highest GDP in the world, yet the size of their country is no larger than California? It shows just how hard that Japanese had to work to rebuild their economy after World War II. They didn't have many resources to work with, but with teamwork, they were able to do it. I also wouldn't underestimate the power of the Japanese military, though I'm sure that they were far more respected during medieval times.

During the days of World War II, I would've thought that the Japanese were the most hated of all Asians. They were heavily discriminated against and were unfairly forced into internment camps. However, America has realized their mistakes and even paid $20,000 in reparations to the families who had to go to these camps.

I rarely hear about any discrimination against the Japanese in this country anymore. I suppose that there are a few Americans who still hate the Japanese, but I can honestly say that I have never met anyone in this country who hated them, nor have I ever witnessed a person on an internet forum making negative comments about the Japanese.

Nowadays, I have good reason to believe that the Chinese and the Koreans are the most hated of Asians. I have seen far more stereotypes against the Chinese and the Koreans in this country than any other Asian race.

most of friends since childhood are japanese-americans. it's necessary to reconcile korean-japanese relations if living in america, but there's still a lot of history involved.

newayz, if you want good sushi and sashimi, you gotta go to a japanese place.

"I think the American way of thinking has led to my thinking of the Japanese as all weird, evil, distant people."

i think those of us living in the U.S. generally make the assumption that japanese are some radically different, bizarre race of people. i think this is because the only exposure we got to japanese culture as kids was through those spacey animes, dragonball z, pokemon, nintendo, etc...the list goes on. based strictly on those, you'd think all japanese were horny pokeball-wielding samurais with humongous eyes, purple hair, and nonexistent mouths who morph into animals and have random yu-gi-oh duels in the street.

i've been able to meet a few japanese, people. not many, but a few. and as you might expect, they're not really different from us.

as for their military history, that was in the past, and you can't blame someone for something that their grandparents did 60 years ago. HOWEVER, i do not understand why their government just refuses to make a formal apology for their actions and acknowledge that what they did was wrong. can you believe there's still people in japan who don't think they did anything wrong? they know damn well what the imperial japanese army did in places like nanjing, manila, and singapore. they know about unit 731, and they know about the "comfort women." and yet they have the nerve to call it "protecting east asia from european interests." they're even trying to change their history textbooks so that new generations of japanese students grow up brainwashed to believe that japan did nothing wrong during world war II.

that is why the japanese are still very much hated by almost all of east asia. i believe that until they can accept the reality and completely repent for their actions (example: see post-war germany, willy brandt) this will continue indefinitely.

Wow, nice topics you bring up here, KrnBoi_insert long #s here_.  I have been interested in this little paradox for a while and haven't had the time to do much research on it as much as I'd like.  However, I listened to NPR online who talked about the China-Japan relations and I think "jesus_pie" here briefly touched on the international relation between them-espeically Japan's unwillingness to make an international apology.  I think it highly reflects Japan's culture.  They seem to have this tendency to make one certain aim and stick to it 'till death.  For example, the kamikazee approach.  They make a decision and will carry it through even 'till death.

And then there's China, who also seems to have a very vengeful nature.  It's in our movies all the time.  Oh, I'm Chinese-American by the way.  My grandmother fled from Shanghai when the Japanese attacked...so she witness the gore and atrocities they did to us.  Now, I find it strange that I, who is born in American, still makes references "...in our movies" or "...they did to us" as though I am Chinese-Chinese.  I believe that gradmother died hating them to this day.  I am in no right to say who is right or wrong, but all I know is that I don't want that to ever happen again.

I'm digressing.  So you're question about has America led us into thinking the Japanese as an odd-ball, my answer to that is MOSTLY no.  Sure, stereotypical Americans who have the control over our TV networks likes to pick odd Japanese shows with funny dubs but I don't think they actively make us think that.  I really agree with "jesus_pie" in the fact that I feel Japan is held in higher regards than Chinese or Koreans.  I think a big factor that plays into that is their government.  Secondly, Japan has been smart enough to be open to foreigners and actively seek out other cultures.  China had a history of being closed and suspicious.  Did you know, in Cantonese, we pronounce China as "zhong gok," where "zhong" means...well..center/middle.  They once thought the universe revolved around their kingdom, hence, "Middle Kingdom."

I haven't met enough Japanese-Americans or Japanese people to further answer that question.  All I know is that I wish I have and/or will.  I've observed that alot of Koreans, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodian, and other Asians on campus tend to group with one another.  That's fine.  But I never see Japanese students in the mix.  So, from my little observation, I feel like they're on a different social plane than we all are in.  Who knows, up north, we're not the most diverse compared to the NY or Cali.

I don't think I answered your question very well...but I typed too much to delete this.  Have a good day.

Oh, actually at the moment, the US hates China the most. Partially because "any communist country is an enemy of the US" and because the US views it as more of a threat than the other nations. I mean, there are US military bases in Japan and Korea. Closest thing to a military base that the US has in China is either the American Embassy or Taiwan....

well, it could be the lack of exposure, cause if you don't meet any of them, then you are only working with what other people tell you about them. this could lead to a bias....
